I have a red devil, a green terror, a jaguar, a texas, and a BP. When I first got them they were the same size. And then I got a JD with them An it grew extremely fast and jumped out and died. then the red devil became dominant and got about 70% of the food and hes slightly less than 2 times as big as the others. I just want to know how to get more food to the others. Ive been trying to give them food individually but the RD still gets alot more food.

RDs naturally have a very fast growth rate (up to 1" per month), so he'll grow faster than some of the other fish you have (for example: BP) no matter what you do. The only thing I can think is to put in more food than is needed, let everyone eat what they can for ~5 minutes, then take out the excess. It would waste a lot of food but ensure that everyone gets their fill. Sorry I can't think of any other suggestions...

I'm also wondering: how large is this tank? You have several very aggressive guys, and if your tank isn't at least 125 gallons, someone is soon going to take over and hurt/kill the others. At this point, my guess is it'll be the RD.

I have a similar situation in my 90G, where I'm trying to get more food to my EBJD, who is competing with a carpintis

my solution: I feed the carpintis first, on one side of the tank, and then while he is eating over there, I drop some pellets to the EBJD on the other side of the tank

the EBJD will never grow as fast as the carpintis, but at least I can make sure he gets a chance . . .

Unless you have a VERY large tank with lots of hiding places, it's probably time to get that RD out of there before it kills something or everything.

If it's that much bigger than it's tankmates, trouble isn't far behind.

This is just my experience with RD's and obviously every fish has an individual personality.

Best of luck

theres always one more aggressive to eat...glad it is your RD.. looking forward to seeing pic

yeah most likely that red devil is going to need a tank to himself sooner rather than later, if he is that much larger then them then he will start picking them off and all of those cichlids dont even get aggressive until they are larger (at least IME)

I've found that out too. RD tend to eat all the food, accelerating their growth beyond tankmates. Hard for me to determine if they are really all that aggressive or if they just eat more and become the dominant bad*** in the tank. I would guess both...

i have a similar problem with my oscar and everyone else, he quickly swims up to the food, scaring away everyone else, i found that if i continue to feed him, by dropping in 3 pellets at a time, he will eventually get full, lose interest and the others have a chance, no mess, no wasted food and everyone is happy

yep, my red devil was growing 1" a month, i got him in october 09 at 3", and its been around 8 months and he is pushing around the 9" or more. for the first 5 months i had him he was easily putting 1" a month. he is a complete hog and you will be luckily to be able to keep him with any other fish, mine is solo and i couldn't be happier.;) the most personality that i have ever seen in any fish.
