I got my reddevil in a 60gal, he's about 6.5". I can't find any good pictures of a natural set up for these guys. Also what would be some good target fish for him? And would sand help keep him from digging so much?

Is the 60 gallon a long term plan? Cause finding target fish that will last in that size tank might be tricky. I would think a lot of this will depend on your individual fish. A lot of people like giant danios because they are not too expensive, get to be a good size, and are fast enough to survive as good as any other target fish in that tank.

As far as sand I never had sand with my RD. But I have heard that it doesn't change anything. Some claim that the sand is easier on them because you don't have to worry about moving gravel bothering their mouth or having a piece get stuck in their mouth. I always credited RD's constant desire to dig pits and move around the decor for their 'fish smart'. Like they needed something to do to occupy them and mine seemed to think he knew better about how his tank should be decorated then I did. That is why most say don't spend too much time worrying about decor with a RD because they will always undo your plans.

Good luck.

Thanks for replying, the 60 gallon is not long term he is going in to a 75gal when he hits about 8". I will give the giant danios a try. Thanks again.

Long term I don't think other fish will work. 1 midas will fill a 75 and there will not only be no need for other fish but there may not be a whole lot of room for them. Unless you have a shy fish other fish are not necessary and target fish are usually used to curb aggressive males from killing mates or curb aggression of aggressive tankmates. Sounds as though you just want more fish for the tank. I would look into convicts or maybe even neets. I would just make sure they have hides just for them. I think fish such as giant danios will just end up eatin.

It's not going to take him long to grow that 1 1/2 inches. You should probably get the 75 ready and put any potential tank mates in there ahead of time so they are established (or at least there) when he gets in and acclimates.

In my 55 I have gravel that looks natural and a couple of rocks for them to hide behind. you do not want too much decorations because you want to give the fish more swimming room. You should not put sand in the tank because it can mess up the fishes gills. Red devils are very friendly animals and are best kept alone. When the red devil gets big enough (they can reach up to 14 inches) they will eat the giant danios.
