Red devil

yes any fish could die if they hit their heads badly and loose body cordination. It depends on how badly the fish was hurt.
BTW you've created 3 threads for the same exact topic. I suggest you remove the other 2 as it seems a bit undisciplined as a member of a forum. ?

How severe are we talking?
It would have to be going extremely fast, extremely hard into the glass to kill it.
The hump is just a water filled sac, so it is not a danger to hit, but the impact to the head that is a problem.
It is not species dependent either, this can happen to any fish.
It is the suspected cause of death for my red belly piranha:

Welcome to the forum!
One way is venting them, I forget which means male or female, but essentially the size of the anus compared with the vent tells male or female.
Otherwise, males will be stockier and grow a nuchal hump, while females do not.

Awesome, once I can share a picture I will. Looks like I might have some babies between a Jag and a red devil.

The nuchal hump isn't really a very accurate way to sex them a lot of the time. This is my current pair - the female has a bigger nuchal hump than the male.

Venting is the only really reliable way - short of seeing a female lay eggs of course lol.
