so i have a 10 inch male and bought a thought to be female . Got her as a fry and now is about 4.5 -5 inches was in a 55 gallon till now i put her in my 135 with the big guy . With a divider well today i had to take out some egg crate i had on the bottom of the tank for the rocks so they would not hit the glass . well it ended up making the tank worse off then without it so out it went . So i let the divider come out too and did a big water change now when everything was out the female starting chasing my big male and flaring up to him and he would flare up and puff his gills and had his fins all at attention like showing off& would swim around all fast, she would just follow him around circling him . Now that everything is back in they seem to be getting along just fine they are swimming around together mostly and sharing the tank . could they have paired up ?? here is a video showing what i could get on video

It does seem to be they are sizing each other up to mate.they breed rough sometimes so have the divider ready in case they try to kill each other

I hade a similar problem so I'm interested in hearing feedback. My 5" female was chasing my 10" make and they were flaring up and then started swimming together. Then she got a lik rough and it's been down hill from that. She got a little battered up today, so there back to being divided. Idk wat to do now.

thanks so far they have been fine just digging out places all the way to the glass and seem to be getting along fine still i have the divider ready to go if needed but i really hope i don't have to use it

Yea she healed up fast and they are flirting a little through the divider. Iv caught herding dry runs a few times and her tube is almost all the way down so hopefully soon I can remove the divider. I'm just worried because when he sees her through the divider sometimes he flirts and other times he charges it. But keep us posted on your red devils. I'd like to know all the details.

Sometimes it is the smaller female that is the aggressor and she can cause the male to kick her lil ass. The aquarium light can create a reflection on the glass that causes them to question their mate and makes them "snap out". This happens ecspecially if they have fry around because they are more aggressive in order to protect their fry. By the time they realize its the mate, the damage is done. Its actually happened to me so I thought I would throw that out there. Try pairing/watching them without the aquarium light.

Sorry OP... Yes your two look to be paired but with red devils(or any other aggressive cichlid) things can change in an instant. It wouldn't hurt to throw something she could hide in within the water. That's a good looking male you got too!

thanks guys , its been 4 days since that video and they are still fine . they have dug pits in the gravel all over though . so i think there searching for a place to lay eggs although i think my female my be barely ready to mate because her tube is not all the way down yet it looks like it is coming along though. i have noticed to he is more aggressive , and his nuchal hump seems to be getting bigger . the video was made when i had everything taken out . but now i have all my driftwood and rocks back in the tank so she has a few places she can go to where he cant get . but thanks also my divider is ready to go if need i really hope i don't though cuz dividers make the tank look ugly. this video was the same day after the water change and everything back in
