So I contacted the Owner of this fish (Mauricio) and he did confirm that his cousin collected the fish by the Costa Rican/Nicaraguan border.
So I decided to contact the one man I know and trust that would surely be able to verify this fish, Jeff Rapps!
He then replied,

Without even going to the link, I can tell you that Mauricio contacted me earlier this month – not long after acquiring the fish.
You see, I was contacted by one of his fish friends in CR who is getting fish from me.
When I informed our mutual acquaintance of my upcoming collecting trip to CR (my wife and I will be there in < 2 weeks!), he had Mauricio to contact me.
It’s a real fish. I’ve known of this morph for >30 years – just never had the opportunity to collect/acquire any.
That may be a reality in the near future.
If none are collected in the upcoming weeks, then still I should be able to secure some individuals post-visit as I’ve made sure Mauricio and my friend/the sole exporter of fresh water CR fish have each other’s emails for future correspondence.
Either way, if any additional reds are collected, they will make their way here.
