I got my baby red ear slider about a month ago, he seems normal but he dosent bask in the light. Hell stick his head out for about 10 minutes at a time where the light is but he wont lay out on his basking platform. Can you help me please?
I have 4 and really only two of mine bask... Often when I come into the room or near them they will get down anyways... or it may have trouble getting up there to bask. My african sideneck run the mintue he hears anyone coming. I just got him... It may just take time...
Check the temperature of the basking spot. If it is correct, then make sure there is a place for it to bask in the spotlight. If both of them are fulfilled, then it is a matter of luck in term of catching him in the act.
i think your light should be a little closer so its warmer. fill the water up as high as you can with still leaving em enough room to bask. it is probably basking ether when you are not around or maybe doesnt feel safe/comftorable at the basking spot. what size tank is that? looks like a 55. how big is your turtle? i see a pleco in there. is there any other fish in there?
basking tempature should be around 85-90. and water should be at 75-85. also you should get a new thermometer. they get curious and like to try tasting alot of things if it were to bite the thermometer it could break and be fatal. if you dont have a heater in there you should get one as well.
the tank is a 40 gallon long and my turtle is about 1 and a half inches. Theres no other fish just the pleco but they get along reallly well they love eachothers company. I read and have been told by alot of people to only put the water at about 2-3 times the height of the turtle
Another thing....since hes really small still can i still feed him fish? if so what kind of fish and how big should they be? thank youo for all the help guys
When RES are young, they have a more carnivous diet which slowly tapers off to mostly plant material. I recommend a mixed diet of floating food sticks like ReptoMin, chopped up worms, crickets, aquatic insect larva, frozen shrimp and maybe some plant material like collard, mustard and dandelion greens. Vitamins should be added to the food weekly as well.
