So this year we have had a lot of what appears to be a Red Ear x Crappie cross pop up. They get larger than a typical Red Ear, I caught a couple in the 10-11" range. Their body shape is very similar to a Crappie (longer face / body) but the fins are layed out like a typical sunfish and they have the marking that a Red Ear has (the red / orange ear). I'll try to snap a pic tonight but anyone know if it could be that or maybe something else?

sunfishs cross so much its kinda hard to tell with out a pic

Sounds more like a green sunfish hybrid to me. I don't know of any crappie hybrids... A pic would be nice though.

Looking at some pics I guess it's an actual Red Ear.. I was comparing it to a site that used a drawing and it looks nothing like it. Google images shows ones that look a lot closer. I'll try to snap a pic of a big one though.

Sorry. I love this picture.

Crappie cant hybridize with Sunfish....Pomoxis and Lepomis are not closely related enough.. White and black crappie do readily hybridize where their populations occur in the same body of water though..

I read an old article that talked about lab created hybrids of largemouth x black crappie and largemouth x bluegill. Never seen pics and dont think its possible in the wild, but in a lab it could be done.

Micro x Lepomis do produce offspring, but I've never once heard of a crappie/bass hybrid..Until I see published/confirmed reports I will stick to my guns with it being not possible
