I've got a mating pair of red eared sliders that I was unaware were breeding. I have them in a 55 gallon aquarium with about 30 gallons of water. In it I have a plastic milk crate with slate on top so they can get out and bask under the heat lamps. Yesterday I went down to feed them and wouldn't you know there was 6 or 7 broken eggs on the bottom of the tank. I plan on building a small pond in the backyard come warmer weather and building a fence around it. I'm wondering however if they will still be breeding in 3 to 4 months or do they only mate once a year? And what kind of soil should I put outside of the pond for them to bury their eggs in? Any suggestions?
