Hi all I need A couple Suggestions im trying to help out a friend, so here is the deal my Bud Bought A 75 Gal Aquarium and bought A red eared Slider cute lil thing, but his wife wants to put fish in the tank as well so im trying to find in inbetween i've seen others with turtles in there tanks but usually its a soft shell I believe also the wife already bought some super size fancy goldfish fantails but the poor little boogers got attacked by the turtle they took them out and put them into another tank. My question now is can a redslider be housed with big fish in such a big tank or are they too aggresive and if they can be housed with fish what type of fish would you recommend i think large cichlids like convicts can hold there own but i can be wrong any suggestion's would be greatly appreciated thank you

Well you pretty much already said most of what there is to say yourself, it really also depends on the turt temper and size but eventually a slider should be pretty much incopatible with fish in the long run. If the turt is really small I would be more conserned about its well being then of the fish´s well being. If your friends have a back yard I sugest this: raise the turt indoor for a few years in a smaller tank and then when its bigger build him a outdoor pond. Sliders trive better outdoors anyway so.:)

I have had success with small green sunfish and small aggressive cichlids. And they are great with koi and other large fish when kept outdoors.

A 75 is not really big enough for a slider and fish long-term. Even a peaceable turtle is likely to stress/trample fish, and an aggressive turtle will be able to corner fish and nip them. There are also water quality issues- a 75 set up for turtles probably has about 30 or 40 gallons of water in it, which is hardly enough for one or two large fish, let alone fish and a turtle.

In a small pond or very large aquarium it is possible to keep a slider with tough, alert fish such as sunfish, some cichlids, or non-fancy goldfish (comets, etc.). My sliders live with several overgrown feeder goldfish, which they learned to ignore after a few hours of futilely chasing them. Still, I wouldn't put a prized fish into their tank. Turtles are opportunists.

fyi, full grown cichlids can and have been known to hold turtles down and drown them. Convicts can be really aggressive. I would really not recommend keeping any of them with a turtle. Goldfish, minnows, and guppies can be kept with a turtle but just be aware that its risky because they can end up being a meal. Ghost shrimp and plecos can be also kept with them, but that to is risky.
