Hey MFK, I’ve finally finished my two month long pond, wall and landscaping combo, and although I don’t plan on adding any turtles this year, I do plan on it next spring. I’m hoping I can create a den of sorts for next winter to help them stay warm and keep them outside, and I’m wondering if this is possible. I know Sliders live in the wild as far north as Connecticut, so they must have some ability to adapt to colder climates. What I’m thinking about doing is digging a nice pit and building a structure above it that the turtle can enter to get to the pit and stay warm next winter. Picture a wooden structure, shoebox shaped, above a 10 or so inch deep sloping hole. I’m probably going to pack it out with hay to insulate it, but I was thinking that should cover it. Any theories or knowledge turtle people could share with me?
