Can someone tell me if a red eared slider will do ok in a 60 gallon tank

Yes, until it gets about six inches long...

A male will probably be OK, a female will definitely out grow it. But remember, turtles grow pretty slowly, so you should be fine for a while, as long as you have a plan to upgrade sometime in the future
