Anyone know the adult size and growth rate of a red ear slider turtle??? and would they be able to fit in a 20 gallon square (2 10 gallons)

Thanks

Adult females can reach over 11" and males bewteen 6-8". From my experience, near hatchlings got to the 5" marker in less than a year.

To answer your second question, adult RESs would do in a 20 gallon long. Babies could for a year or so, but thats it.

I think you mean, an adult would not do so well in a 20 long?

Red Ear in a twenty gallon!?! Poor thing...it will barely be able to turn around...plus there's no room for proper a thermal gradient.

You should go with a smaller species like a Reeves, or mud/musk turtle, etc.

I agree. There are not many species of turtles that can live comfortably in a 20 gallon Long for life. Maybe a Mud, Musk, Spotted or Bog Turtle could live in there for sometime, but if it was me, I'd give them more space as adults. Heck, I have a juvenile Musk Turtle that lives in a 40 gallon, $9.00 rubbermaid tub from Wal-mart. And when he gets bigger I'll probably upgrade it to a larger tub.

RES are very active basking turtles so the more room they have, the happier they'll be. They a need very large tanks as adults and do best when kept in a pond or large tub/stock tank.

Ok I've got an adult female red ear slider.. She's even layed eggs for me and I hatched the only one that lived from her.. Right now she's about 14 inches from top of shell (where her head is) to the back of her shell (where her tail is).. Going across her shell (from side to side) she's about 8 inches maybe a little less.. I don't know if she's going to stop growing or not but she's slowed down quite a bit since I've had her from a hatching.. Here's some pics of her so you can get and idea about her.. I would say a 125g to 150g would be the max you would need for a adult turtle of her size to live comfortably...
