I purchased a group of 4 red empress cichlids last summer as juveniles and was somewhat disappointed in their appearance (ordered online). All the pictures online were adults and I was not expecting the plain silver color. Fish were all about 2 inches or less.
Color finally started in the largest one's fins and now he is starting to show the blue face and color on the body. I have also noticed he can fade the horizontal stripe sometimes. This has been a long time coming and I hope he keeps getting better looking, but it is exciting to see. Pictures don't do him justice.
