Hi all my Tiger Fish has just arrived at the shop, :woot: it has white spot at mo so wont pick it up for a week or so... The thing is it is unlike any I have seen before it has faint blue stripes and a red eye! Its only an inch long!and I can find no fish info on this colouration can any one offter any info ... going back 2 shop tomorrow will get photo - thanx in advance.
It was on the list as Goliath but so was a Vittatus I once owned !

Cool! I hope that little guy heals up fine. Blue stripes, huh? Interesting... Let's see what this guy turns out to be. As for the red eyes, most of them have them, as well as red chins as juvies. The red fades as they grow.

Hi tigerfangs thanx for quick reply.....did not know they have red eye at all....thanx....Went back 2 shop 2 day for a closer look with ligts on ( No photo the shop was packed) the stripes do appear bluish but very faint , the eye is very red - the bottom half of tail is already red( My Vittatus tail did not colour for months and then it went yellow!) the shop INSIST it is a Goliath can give any tips on id, or is he 2 small, the whitespot is bad but fish is active and feeding - hope he makes it!!! Any tips on id will be usefull - Someone told me the Goliath has rounder body , darker stripes and wider tail can u confirm?
One of the shop staff said small Vittitus have no tail colouration ! True?
thks mk

goliath have no stripes, check out fangs' gallery. And from what I have seen the goliath has a less round body.

As rumblesushi stated, Goliaths have no striping (or should I say, very faint). That is tricky at this point because all ATFs smaller than 2.5" don't usually have stripes yet, but they will develop very soon. The body shape of a Goliath is more elongated (rectangular, rather than tear drop) as well as the head, especially the mouth, if not bruised. Tail coloration on all ATFs (redness) varies due to several factors (mood, dominance, background colors, etc...). One thing is for sure, Goliaths don't get gold coloration, on the upper lobe of their tail. The broadness of the tail (basing this info from one Goliath), is not notable at this early stage. It will get more broad as the fish grows. By 10", it will be very noticably broader.
Here is my Goliath at 5-6", note the lack of stripes, long face?

Compare next to Vittatus of the same size, notice shorter snout, and stripes.

I hope this info helps.

Those are beautiful vittatus Tigerfangs.

yeah they really are very colourful shiney vits.

Fangs - could you tell me what you feed them? And also the best diet for a 2.5 inch tiger. Mine is mainly eating bloodworms, the odd danio or river shrimp, he hasn;t taken any prawn etc yet

Thanks rumble! I don't know about best diet, but here's what I did. I fed from 2.5" and still feed them on krill, chopped market shrimp, and smelt. Occassionally, I'll spoil them with live feeders.

note the lack of stripes, long face?- Noted

Wow very nice are they over active I had 2 freshwater dorados for 6 months they were mad as march hares on the move 24/7 very nasty fish
....this means the other fish I had was a goliath had faint stripes but a yellow tail ( Half) ! and this fish is a vit! but it does have stripes already!!!!! and a short snout !!!! will add photo asap(if he makes it)
ANY more accurate info will be very welcome!!!

Thanks again all - this is the reason for joining sites like these .( as well as showing off)
