what kind of aggression would they have if breeding
do they need sand

barbs tend to nip fins, would be sad waking up to find all your geo long tips gone

red heads max out at 6-7"

no xp in breeding my geos yet dunno 1st hand their breeding aggression

They love to sift thru sand, if u want themto breed u want them as happay as possible

:iagree:

When breeding, they will only chase others out of their respective breeding site. If it were me, once they begin breeding, I would remove all tankmates unless you do not wish to growout the fry.

sorry titan didn't mean to steal your thunder by posting before you haha

I knew it was a matter a time before you chimed in on a Tapajo breeding Q

LOL, We're all here to help others and gain knowledge:D

so is sand really needed i have a gravel called razor back red, it is pretty fine, fine enuff that my syphon always sucks it up, and the nics are always eating it and spiting it out, does three sound good

If it's jagged, it's probably not the best idea. I've never personally kept Geos, but from observation, they seem to do best in sand.

Yes, they need sand or a VERY small gravel substrate. Try not to use anything jagged like ibz_rg said, it's not good for the inside of their mouths.

k, how do i do sand, a lot of people tell me its hard, and you have to sterr it alot, and i want like the color of natural sand but i dont know what brand is safe

Sand is not that hard to do. I would suggest getting PFS(pool filter sand) from your local pool supply place. I just bought three 50lb bags for $21. Lowes or HD will have play sand but it's very dirty and somewhat smaller than PFS.

PFS will not affect your water and is very clean straight out of the bag. I usually poor it right into the tank without cleaning it. Make sure your filter intake is positioned far enough away from the sand so that it won't go into your filter because of your fish stirring it up.

Depth really doesn't matter. I tend to fill it up until it gets to the plastic molding at the bottom of the tank. When you do water changes, just slightly stir it around to avoid dangerous build up of gases in the sand. You will see bubbles come up when stirring it around. I like to keep my sand shallow(1-1.5") so there are no chances for gas build up.

One 50lb bag will be more than enough, you will probably have some left over. $7 for substrate..... much better than paying Petsmart prices;):)
