I have been looking for a new project for my 75gal and I am really loving the Red Head Tapajos. Ive done all kinds of reading online and on this forum, just have a couple questions for people who have bred them.

1. About how long does it take the fry to reach 1" after they hatch?

2. I can only find smaller ones (2"). How long would it take for them to reach adult size?

3. What size do they start laying?

4. Do you let them raise the fry? If not then what do you do?

5. What water parameters did you breed them in?

Thank you in advance!

I've been raising a group for about a year, so I'm not an expert...

1. Got mine at about an inch - not sure exactly but I think they were a couple months old by this time.

2. They are slow growers, I think it would take 6 more months to get good coloration and ready to breed.

3. Mine were about 9 months old, maybe 5 inches when they first laid eggs.

4. my ray eats the eggs on the first night. oddly, when the lights go out they don't protect them anymore, but I'm not trying to raise fry so I don't mind.

5. They breed in regular parameters, nothing special. They require clean water in general, and my temp is 80.

Thank you dxdx. Glad to see you didnt need to do anything special to the water. I do multiple water changes a week and keep my temp at 80 so sounds like i should be good. That is pretty slow growth tho.. hopefully I can find some larger ones when the tank is ready.

Anyone else?

1. About how long does it take the fry to reach 1" after they hatch?
- Depending on diet, water changes and temperature, at least two months with higher temperature(82+), every other day water changes, and multiple high protein feedings a day, but can take three or four months if any of these parameters are lowered.

2. I can only find smaller ones (2"). How long would it take for them to reach adult size?
-I got my original batch of two dozen at just under an inch long and within a year, the largest were pushing four inches. Again, this is with heavy water changes and feedings, as well as temps of 82+. Its been almost two years now and the most dominant males are roughly 6 inches with tail and happily breeding in my pond.

3. What size do they start laying?
-I found that mine started flaring and chasing each other around 2"/2.5" but didn't notice any attempts at spawning until about 3".

4. Do you let them raise the fry? If not then what do you do?
-Yes! It is absolutely fun to watch the parents spitting fry and taking turns corralling the little babies into their mouths. Yes, it will take the parents a few tries to get the fry to free swimming and not eat them, but once they get the hang of it, they will continue to produce offspring on a regular basis. Also, when I had them indoors, I would pull a pair and put them in their own twenty gallon tank when I noticed spawning behavior. They will do a much better job with the fry when they don't have the stress of tankmates.

5. What water parameters did you breed them in?
-I don't do anything fancy to my water. Its plain old de-chlorinated tap water. The important thing is that your water chemistry is consistent, and keep up with the water changes. Their color and behavior seems to really come out the more attention their tank gets.

Thanks wfex4. I do 50% daily water changes right now. But dang it sounds like the fry are super slow at growing. Im already breeding EBJD and trying to breed platinums and they are already slow, I was hoping to get something that grows faster.

I liked the fact that the tapajos could be a breeding group, I have pairs just wanted something different.

One more question, could 1 male live with 5 females? Or would 2 males and 4we females bbe better? Ive got enough tanks for the fry.

I ordered 6 - 1.5" juvies from jeff Rapps, Tangled Up in Cichlids. They completely run the tank. All over sifting and running together as a pack. Ive had them for a month now and 3 are growing much faster than the other 3. Cant wait for them to pair up. They are also starting to show some colors. Once they start to pair up, I'll split them and keep 4 of them as opposed to all 6. I do simple weekly water changes at around 30%. Other than that nothing different. Youll love these guys!! Id go to JK47 or peathenster for more specific questions in regards to Geo's.

If you want fast growing I'd go with something else. If I had an open 75 looking to breed I'd go rotkeils or maybe uarus, very fast growing.

Thanks you for your suggestions but I really dont like either of those species.
