Howdy,

To those of you who have them or have kept them

  1. Do they tolerate tank mates? I have an 18'' goldlike knife that I'd rather not have chewed up. How about adult angelfish or plecos?
  2. Can you keep several Red High Fin Wolf Fish together in a 75 gal? (how many)
  3. What's the largest size reached in captivity?
Thanks a bunch,
HarleyK

1. It is a risk to keep them with tank mates. As time passes and they get used to the tank they will become more aggressive. Fish that are well "armored" tend to have better luck with them.(Raphael Catfish, certain Plecos, etc.) When I had mine he would terrorize everything in the tank at 4", even my 8" Channel Catfish. So Angel fish are a bad idea, but as for the other two, it could work, but it also may not work. There is always the risk.;)
2. I've never seen more than one kept together before, other than stock at a LFS, but it probably wouldn't be a good idea, IMO.
3. Typically 8" is the largest they get to in captivity if I remember right...

They do fine in numbers. I had 12 in a 75 at one point. No problems there.

Mine just jumped, he was about 5". He was good with tankmates that he couldn't get his mouth around. I did notice a nasty scare in one of my dempseys that looked like took half of the fish in his mouth, sunk his teeth in, then let go. I was so looking forward to raising him to maturity

1. i'd be more afraid of that knife eating the wolf.
red wolves arent particularly aggressive to any fish that isnt of similar looks.
they also grow slow, and stay small,so big tankmates are a potential problem.
2. red wolves are much more aggressive to each other than malas or golds,at least in my experience.
in all the times ive tried, ive always had some sort of fighting, sometimes ending in death.
perhaps bigJ was luckier than i was since he had so many.
3. largest ive seen so far is slightly over 9".
they wont get much bigger.

1 - From my experience yes and no - My Hifin did just fine with a pair of Salvini and a Rhino Pleco, that's not to say he didn't bite, not often but he did. Mostly tail fins and nice size bites from time to time. Knives are built different not sure how they'd do having their spines bitten.

2- I don't know, never tried it.

3- Mine was 8" when the then 5" Mala destroyed him.

Yes i currently keep 3 erynthrius erynthrius

1. Depending on how there raised will be the outcome of thier aggresion. My reds have been kept with other fish always, and have been fed pellets and feeders. I have never seen any damage done to other fish in my tank from this species

2. I currently house 3 high fin red wolf fish together in a 75 gallon tank, they also live andf have lived with other fish such as mono Pbass, florida gar, various cat fish, royal and bristle nose plecos,sm and lg polypterus(delhezi, senegalis),LARGE 6 INCH MARBLE ANGEL FISH,ect.

3. The largest ive been able to get my reds has been 7-8 inches, but ive heard of bigger ones

In a community setting they seem to keep to themselves, although set in thier own tank seems to bring out more aggresion.

These are the opinion and facts of this particular keeper, and do not reflect or neglegate the thoughts or experience of other fish keepers.
Good luck with your reds,if you keep them well they will bring you years of beauty and entertainment
