hi all..anybod kept red hook silver dollars before? Saw these at a local aquarium shop yesterday and they seem quite pretty and active. Did some surfing and it seems they can become bigger than 6" each and are herbivores. Anybod has experience with these? Do they nip fins? They are really much more expensive than normal silver dollars... :(

They are herbivorous, but they will eat anything. THey will eat flake, pellets shrimp , krill, anything. But make sure to give some spirulina flake also. THey will also eat plants. As far as fin nipping, i havent observed it but they can take some abuse so it makes them a good target fish. I have 3 in with 7 dats.

I agree with what vanimate said. They will eat almost anything.

Are you looking to keep them as target fish??

not exactly...i saw them in the LFS and they seem really active...did some web surfing and saw some pics of them in baltimore aquarium..and think they really look great in an amazonian setup with driftwood, tetras, discus, cories, plecos and the like..so tot of giving them a try.:D

the only other thing i would suggest is that you keep a minimum of 3, preferably more. They wont feel comfortable w/o a school. Also keeping them with other active fish like tinfoils will help keep them active.

yeah! i got 3 red hooks + 4 spotted silver dollars + 10 normal silver dollars! they are so shiny and pretty!

They don't get quite as big as silver dollars but are fast, active fish, I have had them eat fish that were much smaller than they were but never had a problem with fin nipping, I like them.

Very cool fish. I've got a few in a 38g. Tons of personality, but more on the aggressive side.

they'll eat everything, mine chases my normal dollar
