Dark Side of the Moon
Hi i have just become the owner of 2 Beautiful red humps who were sold to me as a pair. I have been told that they already have had fry before in the store they came from, i refrained from getting these fish at first because they were in such a crowded tank. after having seen them in the store for well over a month i decided to get them. wondering just what i could do to help them in tank be happy and have some fry. the male is large about 4.5 inches and the female is about 3 i have them in a tank with gravel some driftwood a cup for their cave. their only tank mates are a snail and 2 types plecos who are each small.

Now i have noticed the male likes to go up to the female, open his mouth and put it on her side gently?

Geophagus love to sift the sand so make sure it is quite fine, like pool filter sand (silica). The driftwood is a must and some plants (I would go plastic) too. Males can be very aggressive towards the females and so she'll need some places to hide out from his pursuit. Having a few rock caves and other nooks and crannies is advisable. They would do best if you could get another couple of females (1 M, 3F). This will take the pressure off any one female (spreads the male's amorous intentions around). He will spawn with any female that is 'ready to go'. Yours are definitely large and mature enough to spawn. The male coming to the side of the female and opening his mouth is a courting action.

What size do you have them in? I was wondering whether there should be a minimum tank size for breeding. I have few orange head tapajos that I'm keen on breeding too.

I have them in a 70G. I have bred them in a tank as small as a 25G but as I say, the males can be rough on the females so more room is better.

As long as there is no chance of the gravel getting stuck in their mouths, it would be fine. But Geos tend to pass the sand out of their gills while filtering out bits of food. That's why I use finer sand.

I agree with Jim, I had a quartet some years ago, and even though I had 2 more females, the male was so hard on the holding female she lost the spawns.
If I had them now, after noticing the female was holding, I would remove the male immediately.

well they lay'd eggs today and are mouth holding the eggs
