I have a pair of mated Red Jewel Cichlids. I bought the female and raised her, and got the male from a close friend. They were in my 55 together and getting even too aggressive for my predators so I moved them into a 10 gal (I know some of your are opposed to this idea) The female is fine, and the male is fine as well. They are very relaxed in the ten gallon I have set up for them. They spawned and I was surprised to notice 14 fry last night! The female is not aggressive toward them and the fry have good plant coverage for hiding if needed. They were swimming with the female for all of the time I saw them, it seemed to be fine.
