I have been checking out the red jewels in my lfs and am considering adding one or some to my african tank. I was worried that they stay too small for my current stock but was reading today that they are highly aggressive and can hang with much larger fish. The fish that he would be going in with would be a 16" pike cichlid, 5" demasoni, 6" acei, 6" rusty, 6" yellow lab, 15" pleco and a large male convict. By the time I add another fish I should have a 90 or 120 gallon tank with some caves. What are the chances that a red jewel or a couple of red jewels would survive and thrive? I know my pike would try to eat them even if they are full grown because he tries to eat my demasoni on occasion but would they be tough enough to be alright. The only fish with similar coloration in the tank to a red jewel would be my rusty but there is still a significant color difference. Just wondered if anyone had experience with them.

I'm not sure how well it would work
Red Jewel cichlids are famed for their crazy aggression. They only reach around 3" so they haven't got size. if your pike is going for the 5" demasoni then im pretty sure your jewel will be gone. sorry dude. :)

I had one with a midas/red devil that was pretty nasty. My jewel bit a chunk out of his mouth and they both got along from there. That same jewel terrorized 3 mid sized Oscars so I put him in with the devil to teach him a lesson.

I think red jewels can get up to 6".. the green ones with only red mouths/bellies stay smaller... i had a green pair at 4" male 3.5" female and they were pretty rugged and nipped and chased everything they couldn't kill. Are they going into an african tank btw? I think they would survive in a lake water setup because they are hardy but they are from rivers in africa not the lakes, and prefer similar water to CA/SA cichlids.
