woke up to find my Red Jewels have laid eggs. funny thing is there are 2 females and 1 male in the cave guarding the eggs. This is the 3rd time spawning but the first time that there are 3 fish guarding the eggs..

the first 2 times the eggs disapeared after a couple days.. all the other fish keep their distance.

tank is a 125gal with 12 three inch fish,
6 are Red Jewels
4 females and 2 males

What gives??

are you sure the other females are guarding the eggs? or maybe waiting for the chance to feast on them as tasty treat?
i have red jewels for a while. there thru all the spawn, there are only the alpha male and the spawning female guarding it. the other fishes like the rest of the jewels and other cichlids try to get in there to eat the eggs.

did you get any success and got some fry on them from previous spawn? if other females are really helping out guarding them , then for me that is a weird behavior. maybe other hobbyist experience that too...

good luck

The three are protecting the eggs... they are the only ones that are blood red in color also. They won't let any of the other fish close to the eggs. I took a small video of them working together but dont know how to upload it on here.

i want some of your babies if they come! lol they do look like they are protecting them but i dont know. i had two male jags in with one female and the other male that wasnt the father would come out of nowhere and tackle my oscar for getting to close to the nest. much before the actual parents did anything. everyone thought i was crazy until i showed them. maybe fish can work and live together in harmony unlike humans haha. i think our fish are smarter than we thought. unless its a catfish, then all they think is OMG NOM FOOD!!!!!!!
