Ok, one of my close friends has two "lobsters" in his tank, one red and one blue. I guess he jus found out that his red lobster has eggs attached to it. They have bred!!! Lol. He said that he has a chance(slim chance, but still a chance) of getting purple lobster. He said it was something like 1 in 1000 chance he gets a purple one. Is this true?? Or is he jus talking crap?? I think that would be AWESOME. I have seen pure white ones red ones and like orange ones. Is there anymore?? How are they with cichlids?? He has his in with some, but his tank is always fighting and tearing each other up, so i dont know if they are the cause of any of the damage I've seen on his fish.

i don't know the species, bt i'm betting it is clarkii or alleni. you will not get a purple one. you will get blue, or red, possibly even white or orangeish as these are all in their genes.

the only actual purple crayfish i have seen are certain cherax species who are supposed to have purple colorations, though never solid purple, and i saw a picture of a solid purple cherax destructor. this was found in a dam in australia where they breed thousands of destructors for food in about 10 lakes. the guy would not sell it at any price. i have a picture of a pink destructor as well. hold up i'll post some.

oh btw, crays with cichlids are nonos. cichlids will eat the crays, or if the crays are huge they will eat the cichlids. you might have one survive a short while if he can hide a lot but he will get eaten eventually.

of course if i put my large quadricarinatus (redclaw) in with the cichlids they might become lunch instead, but most crayfish are smaller 4-5 inches body length and will get eaten even by a similar sized cichlid.

In short, it is possible but akin to lottery odds. Yes, you can't win if you don't play, but playing doesn't mean winning.

Your friend will need to remove the berried female asap from the cichlid tank; give her at least a 10 gallon with caves, lots of plants and cover, etc. And be prepared for cannibalism: crays are very zombie like when it comes to food: if it's meaty, it's food, and that includes everyone.

And as been touched on, lobster are marine, and not freshwater.

Yes, I did know that they were just crayfish. And, I have already told my buddy on several occasions that the crayfish will most likely do some damage to his fish, or vice versa. He has the two(1 red, 1 blue) and 1 that he caught in a local river(GRAND RIVER). They are in a 72 gallon with about 20-25, mixed african and south american and jus about everything else, cichlids and catfish. I am surprised that ANY of his fish are healthy. But it all seems to be working for him. I am surprised because I have ALWAYS tried my best to follow the "rules" or suggestions of fishkeeping. Always did water changes, always gravel vac, and made sure my fish were compatible and didnt overstock them. And he seems to disregard all of the above and is have success. I do believe his fish are somewhat unhealthy, but he doesnt have any severe losses to his tanks, only when adding something new. But, yes, he has them seperated in a 1o gallon, and is watching for any changes from the crayfish. I will pass on the not so good news about the chances of getting a purple one.

Success with aquariums is measured in years with a stable environment and population.
