Red mostly gets DE?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Silvers are more notorious for DE. Reds for PLJ (protruding lower jaw).

DE is mainly due to the environment we provide for the fish. In nature, the fish usually looks up for food.

People have reported success by taping newspaper around the tank, leaving a 1 inch waterline or putting the fish in a fiberglass pond for several months.

Do you think DE could be caused by these high strung fish wacking their heads on the covers of the tanks? When mine was young it was extremely timid and could fly around the tank at the drop of a hat. Now it is two feet long and seems to fear very little (except nets, I found out). It has one eye looking downward. Otherwise seems o.k. Real eating machine, likes shrimp (I leave on the shells but remove front and rear spines) and frozen smelt. Sadly shows little interest in prepared foods.

da definitely could be one of the factor for DE. i read in another thread long time ago about this topic, and ppl seem to agree on this theory. this happens to sliver more than any other aros (silver do have a hella higher chance to get DE than any other types), and they are known to be the best jumper in the whole family. i bet they do extensive damage to their head upon the impact. da's why if u have a silver, try not to fill ur tank all the way up, leave some head room for the poor fish
