My 5 inch red parrot is still eating but seems a bit lethargic. I took a good look at him and noticed his side are very scaly. Sort of like human with dried skin. Does anyone know what it is? Please help as he's one of my favorite fish.
temp 72, Zero ammonia. Nitrate is 40ppm. Tank mates are somewhat aggressive but I don't think they're the cause. The RP actually holds his own even though is smaller than some of the other inhabitants.
Nitrates are a bit high. The reason I ask about the tankmats is it sounds like he might be getting picked on. If he still eats, and has sort of dryish looking sides and acts lethargic, sounds like aggression. But pics would definitely help.
Treatment may consist of antibiotics targeting the causative agent. They work best in the very early stages of dropsy. A more hands-on approach is to raise the aquarium's temperature a few degrees - slightly higher than usual. Adding Epsom salts (Magnesium sulfate) to the water (at a rate of 20 mg/L) helps to encourage the fish to expel unnecessary damaging fluids. Prognosis
Most cases of dropsy are fatal. By the time the fish has swollen up enough that the scales begin to raise, the internal damage may be too extensive to repair. However, if the fish is placed in a quarantine tank and treated with a broad spectrum antibiotic or a bacterial remedy from any aquatic sales shop, then the fish can make a full recovery in less than a week.
OK thanks for the info. It doesnt look like the posted picture above. the scales look dried and flaky with a few missing. He's still eating though. Water is a little murky so i cant take any good snaps of him .
