I have found a beautiful Red Port acara, I am guessing he is a male, he has nice color. The fish is at the store on hold for me, please give your opinion.

do you think he would be ok w/ a female oscar, 8-9 inches in size?
I have a 125gal, 6 ft tank. she is territorial about her spot but pretty mellow w/ other fish I have had.

I did some research....the Acara is are pretty much a calm fish and males are more territirial.
I am think it will work, the acura is a male, he would be more aggressive than a female, stand up for himself if needed. and my O is a female
I would like some advice from the 'wise ones'

hmmmm

Your thoughts please.

2nd question...
would the acara be ok w/ a GT - I don't have one but would like a nice one.

I was wanting a geo but was told they were not a good choice w/ and O. Plus I can't find one around here!

Thanks so much for your time. :headbang2

It will really depend on what the 'red port acara' actually is. That's a common name I'm not familiar with. If it is a port cichlid or an acara, it should be fine with the oscar. A port cichlid should be fine with a GT as well, but if it's an acara instead ... they sometimes clash with GT's due to looking similiar.

the scientific name is: Cichlasoma portalegrense

here is a link to the profile. the fish in the profile pix looks very similar, but the one I am looking at does not have fins as large. I hope it will one day.

I have chatted w/ the previous owner of the fish. seems this fish used to run his previous tank. so I think it will work w/ the O. (yeah!!)
but what about a GT???

if I can find an awesome GT my tank would be complete!

If your talking about the fish we discussed, then a GT isn't an option with him. Been done and didn't work.
The Oscar should be fine though I'd keep an eye on things untill he settles in and finds his place in that tank. He can handle himself, but is used to being the big fish. Again if we're talking about the same fish it's not a "red port".

You may repost my pic , to clarify things.

no opinion on the Oscar, but I tend to agree about not keeping port cichlid with GT; I briefly kept a port cichlid with a Blue Acara, and there was instant conflict . . . neither fish was aggressive with any other tankmates, before or since

since Blue Acara is cousin to the GT - - and more docile at that - - I would expect similar conflict putting a port cichlid with a GT . . .
