hi guys, i have a few spare tanks i want put in use and i wanted to try breeding my red and bosemani rainbows from my main tank but I have a few question. i cant tell the sex of my red rainbows, what the requirements would be to breed them, and why my smaller red is a light brown color will that change as it gets larger? for the bosemani rainbows i have 2 males and 2 females my smaller male looks kinda deformed or chubby compared to my larger male. I know bosemani have been heavily captive bread and i was wondering if these are some good specimens to breed? sorry about the cloudy tank just added some fluorite to the substrate. thanks

Are you thinking of cross breeding? Red males are red and high bodied. The female's are olive and silver. They scatter their eggs over plants in the morning. They will do all the work for you just keep the water quality good. My biggest problem was finding females for some reason. Good luck.

Like mentioned they scatter their eggs on live vegetation so lots of low plants carpeting a good bit of the floor of the tank. When i bred them i housed 2 or 3 males to 4 to 6 females in 55 gallon tanks. If i did it again i would use 40 breeders instead for the greater horizontal space.

How big are your fish now, in the pics they look a bit small still. None of them are fully colored yet in the pics. I would guess the off color red is a female but could be depending on size a young male still. The red male is nice but those are not its breeding colors or at least i hope not. When he does cycle into breeding condition he should just glow in color. The bosemani for sure have growth to put on first before trying to breed them as they still have their juvenile shape.
