Are these two companies related? Their company names are similar, product name and design are similar too. That being said, anyone got experience on these two? Any reviews?

No they aren't the same company. They do use the same cartridges (the pleated mechanical filtration cartridges, at least) but there are differences. Nu-Clear uses a stainless steel clamp instead of a threaded plastic ring. They also have 1" ports instead of 3/4". The Nu-Clear are better in my experience, which also seems to be the general consensus.

Here are some links to threads about them:

Thanks Dan, after reading the threads, I agree that the Nu-clear seems to be better. Can the Nu-clear do the backflush like the Ocean Clear? These are drawings from Ocean Clear's online manual on how to do backflush:

Apparently that can minimize off the can cleaning.

No, I don't think the nu-clear filters can do this back flush option. But you can stack the Nu-Clears if you have the room. That way you can double the filter area giving you twice the time between maintenance.

Nu-Clear is the best option IMO

Edit: I have both, 7 total.

I would be surprised if you couldn't backflush a Nuclear????

I have an OceanClear and hated it! I always had seal issues when using a high flow pump. I have given up on cartridge filters all together! But I would choose a NuClear over an OCeanClear if I was forced to choose one.

Yeah I bet it would be possible but you would need a new cover. My covers are domed and there's a fitting that goes inside and covers the top of the filter cartridge holding it down. The domed cover collects trapped air in a large bubble and there's a small screw vent. Loosen and vent the air then tighten back up for a water tight seal. With a different top it would be possible to backflush for sure.

The Nu-Clear seal is way better. Easy to remove and install and I never had a problem with them leaking. I use a wrench to tighten the lid, they come with a plastic fitting and it is crap. Just use a 1/2" 6 point deep well socket and crank it until all the clamping ring sections are the same distance apart. It's hard to explain, I'll take some pics if someone really needs this info.

If you lightly grease the threads on the clamp it makes a huge difference - since I did that they clamp down easily with the plastic handle. Before I greased the threads (I use marine grade grease that I use on my boat trailer bearings) I would have to crank on the handle while tapping the ring with the plastic handle of a screwdriver. I also put a bit of silicone o-ring grease on the inside surface of the ring, they close like butter now!

Thats a good tip! I'm going to try it tomorrow.
