I have a red seven that I've had for many years who has paired up with two rot kiel and a green at different times but has never had fry. Is it possible he is infertile? Is this common with reds?

it is possible he is infertile but i really dont think there is any way of knowing for sure. also i just got three red severums all about 1 inch long. does anyone know how big they have to get before they start to get red because right now they just look like gold ones. One of them actually has little bit of red on each side of his face under his eyes.
PS i know they are not gold severums because i know the owner and he wouldnt rip me off and sell the me wrong thing

Agree with Shenz, I have 7 Red Sevs which are all between 3-5 inches. They were all red when I got them around 2" from my Local Pet Store. They were hard to come by here in Indiana. It took my local Store over 3 months to get them but it was worth the wait, they are beautiful fish. I have some Golds and a few Rotkeils and everyone is starting to pair up now in my 125. Just moved a Red Male and a Gold Female to a 30 gal and they laid eggs Tues PM. I have also read that the Red Males are infertile. I am hoping that's not the case and will let you know how this batch turns out...This pair did lay eggs in the 125 but everyone else ate them..

Every super red severum I've ever owned was red in the whole body even from a small size. What you have chris is a gold severum. I believe most red severums are infertile.

I trust the pet store I got them from. They wouldn't give me the wrong type of fish. They had one tank full of little golds and another separate tank full of little reds (with no red on them haha). But the owner said they would color up when they get bigger I just want to know when... I trust the guy so if he screwed me il be pissed. It just seems like they should definitely be reds because this batch was separated from all the golds and labeled as "super red severum". They even had a picture of a red severum to go with the label
