I saw the nicest wild caught red shoulder sev. at my local pet shop and was wondering if its also known as the red headed sev.?

Are they the same fish?

What should this fish go for? It was about 6 to 7 inches selling for $70.00.

Anybody???

I was also wondering about shops that label their fish as "wild" what purpose does this serve? Is there something different about wild caught fish vs. tank raised fish?

The only thing I can think of is that it might be harder to get on pellets and more prone to disease (parasites) which are both negatives!?!?!?

you may be talking about the rotkiel severum probably the same as red shoulder/head.
i would treat it the same as you would any severum.
i will move this to cichlids to get more specific info

the purpose of "wild" as opposed to captive bred is that when your breeding fish they tend to get inbred and the gene pool so to speak becomes very shallow.the dna for all resistence to disease is the same because everyfish came from the same "adam and eve". so while you might think that a wild would be more prone to sickness it actully is more resistent. and if you breed your wild caught with your captive bred the gene pool becomes bigger. a good subject to look at is the silver arrowana. no one knows why the have "eye droop" all they know is asians dont catch it and they have never found a wild arrow with it. with all the breeding done captivly now the silver arrows gene pool is getting shallow. umbre is anouther. you can no longer import these fish and there are only about 2 really large scale breeders that breed them in the us. im interested to see what happens to them in the near future. anyway i hope i have answered your question i know i kinda shot all over the place.

questioned answered, thank you! more info is welcomed is anybody has some!!!

Thanks for all the info siesta, can anybody tell more me more about the price???

Well having worked in a LFS,and not knowing any of the scienitific explanations for the difference between "wild" or "tank raised" fishesall i can say is that with the word "wild caught" the price of the fish goes up anywheres between 10 - 20 dollars.I cant tell you how many times a customer would come into the store and see the "wild caught" sticker ona tank and become stary eyed and think they were getting something special. For example they would pay 25 dollars for a 3 inch "wild caught" Jag,when right in the very next tank the same size "tank raised" Jag sold for 10 - 15 dollars. :screwy:

interesting, thou i will admit for money purposes I would go with the tank raised one. the lfs that i found this one does not have any tank raised, only wild caught ones, which I wonder.....

How does one even verify something is wild caught vs. tank raised? Could a shop owner just claim it?

Anybody got an idea on a price for the originally mentioned fish?

goes back to inbreeding. ever see those oscars that looked fugly as hell?... inbreeding. if you got a chance at wild caught, go wild. less likly to lose it.
