I have 2 questions about Red Slider turtles.

1. Are they illegal in VA?
2. What is the best foods and brands to feed them?

I had them 5 years ago, but now all the foods are
different and the legal system has probably changed
with turtles too. Please let me know!!!

Anyone at all keep these turtles?

I live in NY and they are legal here. I have had mine for 14 years...if your the one who started the slider pic thread you can see him on there. For a staple I feed him Wardey Reptile Sticks or Reptile TEN. For treats he gets shrimp pellets, bloodworms, tubifex, earthworms, freeze dried krill and TONS of different kinds of fruits and veggies (tomoatos, oranges, plums, grapes, lettace etc.) One in a great while, around the holidays he gets shrimp, chicken or turkey. And only once in his life has he had live fish. I have no idea about the laws in VA...check out your DNR website. They may even live wild there but I am not sure.

I saw some turtles that looked alot like them in the lake behind my house. Maybe they are Red Sliders? Although I have the wild ones in my yard, I would want a Captive one. Less diseases and so on.

they are not banned there, they are a common turtle (can find em im ponds all over)
you just cant get em under 4" unless you are useing em for "educational purposes"

as for feeding them, i find that the reptomin sticks work the best along with some feeder fish (dont have to feed em feeder fish if you dont want)

Feeding anything feeder fish is a bad idea.

ok, Reptomin will be fine then. I also have sun dried shrimp I'll treat them with.

I feed live fish to mine .. I also use the reptile sticks.. I have a tank in my basement that i breed guppies, roseys, and convict cichlid in.. I only feed live fish that I have bred .. My nile monitor loves roseys .. I always read the ingrediants list on the packages of food I buy.. the more whole ingrediants the better..
