It looks like a few strands of hair like red things coming out of both sides of my new Delhezi's gills. In the pics look at the top of the gills and I think you will see it. Also its very jumpy. It looks like he is attacking the air or having a seizure. I just got it yesterday. Hasn't eaten yet. Heres some pics as best and as fast as I could. Thanks for the help... Also, the fish is normal most of the time. Hides most of the time.

the red things are external gills natural nothing to worry about
skittish hideing its a new fish to the tank let it settle in
is it eating?

haha... Thank you. I'm new to Poly's as you can read. In 1 month I went from none to 3. I think I'm adicted. Well I havent seen it eat yet but there are ghost shrimp in the tank so it may have.

most would say raw but i use cooked also go to your local supermarket, squid, shrimp, frozen fish eg sole ,pullock, beafheart, chichen hearts
LFS ghost shrimp, blood worms, carnavor pellets

When born all Polypterids go thru a larval stage which includes external gills
these gills extract O2 as the water passes over them. They are then absorbed back into the bichir as it grows. Most vestiges of these gills are gone before you buy them however some retain them for sometime as yours has and sometimes they regrow them-Anne

lol, did you steel that guy from redtail fanatic? j/k, nice bichir.
