Hi I have a 20 Gallon long grow out tank with a 3 inch Red Oscar and HAD a Red Tail Barracuda, but I found it dead about 2 hours after the much needed water change. I did a 50% change and refilled w/treated water. The rtb was sulking at the bottom, I had to get ready for work and before I saw it dead. Did I take out to much bacteria while cleaning? The tank does have very small pebble gravel. I'm assuming they're very sensitive to water parameters as well?

Sorry for your lose, a few year back I did a WC and lift the room for thirty minutes and came back and my 8" Goliath was dead. I had a 6" royal pleco in with him at the time and was fine from the WC. If your oscar is stil fine from you changing your water that answer your ?. I do a lot of little WCs to make sure I stress it out. Most characins is sensitive to big WC.

I lost a few fish to large water changes thats why I live by pothos filtration and 10% twice a weak. Once every 2 months I do three 20% changes 3 days in a row. this is to clear any mineral build up.
Also chaeck the ph of your incoming water verses tank.

Most of my tanks are bare bottom, theirs not much bacteria in bare tanks. It tricky when doing water change, I never wipe the bottom clean just the walls of the tank.
Any Characins, I would do little WC just to be on the safe side.

Yes the oscar being alive answered my question already, just wanted to make sure I knew why the fish passed thanks though im going to not to huge water changes.

Yeah I think it was the ph that pushed the RTB to the limit.

i stock my filtration with alot of crushed coral so at any time the ph is very buffered so when i do water changes there is a minimal ph swing that can stress my fish.
