Hey, i'm looking at getting a trio of toothy characins for my tank and ive decided on either a group of rt payara or rt barracuda. The tank is 4x2x2 120 and the inhabitants are, assorted polys, hujeta gars and Nicaraguenisis. which one would you pic for my set up / which one would be more compatible?

Thanks in advance!

I'd say the barracudas because they don't grow as large so your other fish have a better chance of surviving haha

I'm not sure how the payara would treat those others over the long run but they'd be my choice.

im not really worried about my other fish ending up as lunch, its just that i like both the same and want to know what others would do

I've never owned either, but I honestly think a pack of either species would look great. Is this tank going to be the final tank for them? I'd be a little wary of the 4' length, as both species can be flighty from time to time. If you're looking at upgrading down the road, then I would personally go with the payara, just because I think they'd be more impressive looking fully grown vs the aces.

But I do love aces, too..

Solo red tail payara. You don't have room for three. You don't have the length for the 'cuda.

I have both. 5 aces and one red tail payara in a 6ft tank. They are different fishes with very different behaviour. For a 4ft tank one red tail will be a better choice because they are less active. They hunt in a different fashion and spend much more time near the bottom moveless. My sabbertooth is more agressive than aces and can cause more damage. She seems to be a little territorial and sometimes chases the kudas. Honestly in a 4ft could be to risked put more than 1..but one seems ok to me. Aces are much more active, swimming in explosion way like little torpedos. I can't say that they are always swimming but when they want they swim as fast as possible. Aces works very well in a group and I never had intentions to keep less than three because I think that good part of the kudas charms resides in shoal interactions. I will not recomend kudas for less than 6ft tank.

Sorry for my poor english
