I have a 6ft tank with various SA cichlids. I have 2 florida gars as well. I'd like to add something to swim in the top levels. Gars are just hanging above and all cihclids prefer the bottom. I have the opportunity to buy a large Acestrorhynchus falcatus. I can't really find information about how this fish behaves in a tank. I found out it's easily scared, ultra fast swimming hard to feed and so on. To make things simple, does it swim like an arowana or hovers above like a gar?

They just sit there hovering till feeding time.

Chalceus sp. if kept in a school but they get about 10-12"

Hujeta characins rarely leave the surface. Get to about 10-12".
Also SA needle fish are a gar like top dwellar and they get a bit bigger than gar food.

but the gar will be a problem with any new tank mates.

Cudas & Chalseus IMO & experience do best in groups of 3 or more - Chalseus are top swimmers - Cudas mid level but both do use the entire tank hunting for food. In my case the Cudas are much more active and the chalseus less - niether species would I call "hard to feed" - they are always hungry and not from lack of food just their nature. Both can be skitish - the Cudas seem more fragile tho maybe because they don't share the chalseus' bulk.

imo hujetas are too fragile for the cichlids, chalceus would be a good alternative, but take at least 6-8

Odoe Pikes Or African Pikes are awesome, I may order one from River Wonders in a few days, They can be very aggressive in feeding time and have some awesome teeth, They max out at about 12" That's the largest specimen so far.
