Where there is sunshine
can u ppl give me some info on redtail gars? I got one recently and it eats feeders..
how big do they get? and can I keep him in a 55 gal(alone)?

Well first off its not a Gar. Often referred to as the Freshwater Barracuda or Spotted Cachorro, the Red Tail Barracuda is a Characin related to both tetras and the piranha.
You probably shoul post this in the other predtory fish forum-Anne

wtf? Its not a gar, looks nothing like a gar.

This should be in "other monster fish".

I like redtail cudas, brilliant fish.

i think they get to be about a foot long. if you can get a larger tank, but it will probably be alright in a 55g for awhile.

thanks for ur replies....
sorry 4 posting it here....I thought it was a gar since it kinda looks like it..(for an untrained eye...)

They are also known as hujetas and they get near a foot long, you should get a tank not less than 18" wide to keep one well. If you use the search button up near the top of the page you will see several threads for them, try hujeta or fresh water barracuda, or red-tail barracuda.

I was wondering what people thought would be compatible tankmates for freshwater barracudas, I was thinking a couple birchirs, they get big enough not to get eaten, same for the barracudas, was also thinking of some catfish, maybe some corys cause they stay at the bottom and the barracudas are always at the top of the tank, anyway, what do you guys think

55 is too small ...atleast a 6' tank
