Red tail cat won’t stop swimming

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks to everyone for their help. The little guy passed last night. He wasn’t doing well and that was before he lost his tail. I tried everything I could and nothing worked. I think my water is just giving me false positives on ammonia so I plan on starting to feed again I have night crawlers coming tmrw thru mail and I know my plat will gobble them up. I just wish I wasn’t dorming so that I could have prevented the death of the other cat

My sympathies. Not unexpected. BTW, other fish can sense the weakness and attack, which what was probably done by the surviving RTC.

As for the water ammonia test false positive, I don't understand why keep going on a guesswork instead of exploring it as I have been suggesting? I'd start by testing tank water versus tap water or whatever your source water is and against a more pure water like bottled or filtered.

Also, I'd heed the advice of others and up the filtration as suggested by Travis or make sure the water being drawn into your canister is much better aerated, which could amount to the same thing as adding another canister.

Alright. Although I personally have never experienced this but it sounds like the 0.25 ppm false positive reading can be a norm for you and Travis. The single 1 ppm reading is strange though. It seems you did have an ammonia spike or it was a fluke. In either case, I'd increase filtration (I personally would do it by adding more stirring to the tank, like a powerhead, so that the water being drawn into the canister is better aerated) and still use bottled and tap water as your references for the ammonia testing every now and then to make sure this is consistent and reliable...

... In part, because I don't understand why your ammonia test is not bright yellow but exhibits a tinge of green. Especially when you run out and buy a new test kit, I'd repeat all this testing to be sure nothing's changed.
