Hi iv been wanting a rtc since i was a kid and never thought it possible to keep such a huge fish.Im now in the position were Im building a 8x8x3 tropical pond in the shed/fish shed so iv set up a temp tank 4x2x18 and just wondering is it to big for 2 and half inch rtc.I have got a wee 2 footer i could put him in at the moment but would he not have loads more room in the 4 footer or will he be scared to come out of hiding in such a big tank ?

Put him in the 4 footer. More water volume means better water quality most of the time, which means he will show a better growth rate.

He'll be just fine. Sweet-looking tank and an excellent start for him being your pet. Once settled, he will have no problem coming out and searching for food, first at night, then more and more at any time the food is dropped in, especially if you keep it dim (IDK if your plants would allow it).

Long as your filtration ect is proof against lil' fish... I found big tanks aren't an issue w/ baby monsters but sometimes we don't think about if it can get into this or that piece of equipment we really don't want them in. From the looks of your pics its been addressed already though =)

thanks lads just couldn't find this info on the net everything else except this lol ill get pond build pics up s.a.p need to work out the best way to do the viewing window thinking of cutting a groves in the blocks 2 deep then coating it in fibre glass then filling with silicon and sliding glass in the grove think that would work ?

On paper it sounds like it should work but practice is a whole different story. I think glass should go in first then silicone squeezed in.

I've never read anyone doing a glass like this but this question/idea really belongs in the DIY section - check it out - there is a truckload of ideas and reports and experiences there on how to waterproof a viewing window. Keep the thread on topic, please.

There is no such thing as too big with a rtc ;). Great looking tank though
