Ok so im moving house in march and im sorting my tank out in advance:nilly: I was looking at buying a 10x3 tank all glass, would it be easier/cheaper to build? The thing is building the tank i could probs go for 4 foot wide. I know these cats grow huge but if its going to end up in a pond then i would prefer the nice looking glass tank to keep other fish in the future. i have 6x2x2 that i can use as a sump, and i have not got the catfish yet as i wanna have his home ready for when i get him. please help i would love some opinions.

im not clear on what you are saying here-do you mean the 4foot wide would be a vat rarther than a tank if so you will enjoy the tank views more as trops are better with the option of side view.
if you are going for a real mega setup i would say go as massive as possible with a viewing plate.

I have these big cats in a 8'x4'x30" tank right now at 1.5 years old. I HOPE this lasts them another year, and I think it should. But, then it will definitely be time for an upgrade as I can't imagine these guys in anything less than 6' wide at 3-4 year olds. I figure my cats are up to 27" and 1.5 years old. Yes, their growth will probably slow down length wise. However, they are VERY active fish, and as they get thicker, it gets harder and harder to turn for them.

If I were you I'd put your money, time & resources into builiding the pond instead of starting out with a tank. (Unless of course you're renting and not buying).

Building would most likely be cheaper and you can fit it to the available space, as said above 6 feet wide for life would be min.

i'm into Red Tials myself, I would go with either an aquarium for life OR a pond (heated). Its too expensive really to build a tank for half its life then never see it in the pond. If you like seeing the RTC build a massive aquarium, think it out in plans first. Go see other aquariums, see if you like tall, or wide, or whatever, and go with what works best for the RTC and what makes you happy too.
OR you can invest in a pond. For an RTC, unless you live someplace rather warm, it will need to be heated at least in the winter. Make sure you have spoken to people who keep ponds. They can give you helpful advise on where, how and what to do with and for your pond. Also make sure you have a way to protect your catfish, both from predators and theives. For a pond there are net systems that can cover and protect your fishy. For your aquarium, (make sure where you put it can handle the weight, easy to forget about, but really important) just make sure your house has an alarm system. Its riskier for a pond, since it is out in the open, but an aquarium is pretty safe in your home.
(i guess it is clear which I prefer) but I have both. (not yet a "massive" tank but, am planning for a 2,000gal one day.

i live in england and have like a foot of snow outside so an outdoor pond is a no-no, but... were im moving has a huge basement so im open to put a BIG pond down there was thinking something along the lines of 10x8 or a 12 foot in diameter round pond im not sure whats best? im going to keep my 6x2x2 for the two oscars and hopefully add a few stingrays to the pond plus more catfish:nilly: are there any other good sized cats to share a pond with an RTC?
i know ull all say tsn and ill probs get one lol but i want something different.

I have to say, I have a TSNxRTC and I just LOVE him. He looks great and is super friendly. Um, if you want something really different. What about a planiceps. You'd have to make sure this guy is big enough as they are thinner than a TSN, but get nice and big.

Planiceps, is that the skinny looking tsn??
and yeh i think the hybrids are awesome, i have seen a fairly big one at my lfs hes bout 18"... nothing compared to one i saw on here i think its necros? not sure but i dowt on that ting lol
