My LFS usually has very well maintained tanks and tends to take a lot of very large fish that people can no longer or want to care for, but..

They have a 2+ foot Red Tail cat in an indoor pond by itself. The fish looked relatively healthy although a bit thin when I first saw it a month ago.

I went there yesterday and looking from the top, I noticed very large, almost bloody areas on it's back. I figured the fish just wasn't healthy in general and had issues before getting dropped off at the store.

When I looked at another tank that had 5 or 6 2-3 inch red tails in it, all of the exhibited the same condition

What would cause it? I don't have any pics to share....

poor water quality

Do you know more specifically about its history, normally the symptoms of a stress-syndrom appear delayed.

Bloody parts are a sign of a septicemia indeed.
