Hi all,

I have a juvenile red tail (seen in the vid below - vid taken before the injury).

The other day he broke one of his main whiskers/feelers.. It's not snapped off but appears to look like its causing discomfort. I didn't know if to cut it off or not but after a little research I've decided to let the fish remedy itself.

However since this injury came about I've noticed he has had difficulties findings the food and now his stomach is full.. Not from feeding and all my other fish are still in the tank.. I've seen him take in a few stones also, so can only presume that's what his stomach is full off.. Will he be ok? What will happen? Will he eventually bring them back up?

He throw them up most likely, but you need to remove the rocks he can swallow or he will continue. Looks like you have many future snacks for him in there.

Ok.. Thanks for the reply. Shall I change/ remove the substrate? I've tried to keep it natural (other than the plants being plastic. Can't have real plants with the Pacus)

Also those stones are irritating his belly, switch to sand. If it were me i would quarentine it, and either put it to sleep and massage the rocks out then when he recovers put him back in the tank, or find some medicine that makes fish throw up. But just wait a couple of days, this is normal for them so it might fix themselves

Good idea. It's the first time he's done it to be honest. Wondering if his broken whisker/feeler messed up his signals?

Looks like he is trying to pass the stones now. Been constantly swimming like this for an hour or two. It's clear to see a bulge at his a hole

A few days on and a lot of the stones have been passed through the digestion system.. However he is now swollen to an extent he can't pass any more.

Welcome all suggestions on how to put him to sleep. Or suggestions on medicine to make him vomit. Anything!

Not a good ending im afraid. The poor little fish suffered from a prolapse.

I had no option but to put him to sleep. He looked to be in a lot of pain. Certainly a lesson learnt.

It wasn't nice putting him to sleep but at least he is no longer in pain. RIP Rufus :(

Pic is after he passed.
