Hi all,

I'm wondering if Red tail payaras can be kept as pair?

I currently have one which is about 6", thinking of getting another of the same size (maybe slightly bigger).. Are they aggressive to each other when kept as a pair?

i would say go for a trio if possible. i kept 2 and there was some aggression between them. when i added a few more aggression stopped. u still may get away with your pair if u provide big enough tank.

I'm keeping 8 dats, and a motoro ray with my payara.. Would that be enough distraction to curb aggression? I've seen videos of ppl keeping 2 armatus, seems fine :S.

agree, lots of space and enough fish to curve aggression

typically(!) armatus' aggression grows with age.. most times than not, they're kept alone once they reach a decent size. However, some keepers on this forum have had their luck with keeping two together.. maybe you'll do fine! Tats from what I understand, are more school friendly.

Yesterday, I had a total of three Tatauauias. This morning one of them passed away :/ So far, it's been okay- both of them seem to be a little more active. One is swimming back and forth in the tank and the other one, usually hiding, is chillin in the open. I'm looking to get the third one replaced.. in the mean time, I'll keep you posted! Btw, their small- about 5-6" each

I can only speek from personal expearence and this may not reflect others expearence but I did have two Tats which seems to get along until they reached about 10" then the trouble started. ended up with one mauled dead tat. this was in a 180g, I suspect if there was more it would not have been an issue.

hmm.. i know they get along fine as a school when younger, but i wonder if it's a size thing like the armatus that when they get too big, they need to be kept alone. i think tats are the least kept of the 3 species and less are known about them

I decided to keep just one Tat just to play safe.. Having said that, would my dats be in great risk by the time my Tat reaches 10"?

iTee, good call. One of my tats is consistently chasing the other one around now haha looks stressful for the other guy :/

i cant decide wether my payaras are armatus or tats becuase they have red tails but the adipose fin is a different color but they are a pair and they get along fin even tho one is 7 1/2"and the other is slightly smaller they nip at and sometimes charge oneanother but nothing major they are with four large silverdollars a jurapari and a 8" yellowtail cuda, i wish i could get another one but i dont want to overcrowd my tank with alot of other fishes since im getting three small 6"pbass and my lfs took about a year just to find these two
