So, 100 gallon tank.
Thinking of doing 4 red tail payaras. Was wondering what would do well with them? I was originally planing to do some polypterus, but I find myself looking for something a little more... "Toothy" :grinno:

So yeah, just wondering what some good predators to go along with the red tails would be? I've heard that scombs can sometimes work. I was thinking of maybe doing two dats but they just grow too slow for my taste.

Thought about cichlids too, maybe a nice male Jag and some other large nice looking cichlid.

Any helpfull suggestions towards keeping payaras would be greatly apreciated aswell, you can never know to much. ;)

Thanks in advance.

i have always had aros (for the top), atfs, pbass, (for the middle). poly's would be great for the bottom. redtails are good in a comm tank, unlike the fish in ur avatar

Yeah, but I dont think my tank is really big enough for an aro, although I'd really like to have one I'd end up giving it away once it got to big, same with pbass.

How big to ATF's get? I really like the look of them, but I'm guessing they get to large for a 100 gallon tank.

Thanks for the suggestions vamptrev. Keep 'em coming people!

:D

A single Adult Red Tail will not work for a 100gl tank. It would be a good grow out tank.
As for Scomb, they suck (IMO!)
Tat's are a nice fish to have, but don't realy swim to much (IME with my Tat) and is not an aggressive eater. The VATF is by far my favorite fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Swims like crazy!!!!!!, eats like a hungry bum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, and has a nice set up teeth.
Me and you probly like the same type of fish..... anything visious, aggressive eater, and a nice pair of fangs (except piranahs) and last.... something every house don't have :)
If you get a tank a lil bigger, I HIGHLY REC. you getting atlest 2 VITTATUS AFRICAN TIGER FISH. The best $ for fish I ever spent on! The only flaw in my book is they grow pretty slow. Say 1" every 3 months or so. My Tat (8.25") was good with 2 6"VATF'S, 4" Motoro Ray, 9.5" Spotted Gar. Had a nice teeth tank going :)
Still the same except the VATFS. One I sold and about 5 days later the other DIED for no reason. Tried to buy another one, but they are out of season right now:(

That sucks that a Red Tail wont work. :(
I was told that it would.

Just trying to get a good stocking idea for this tank. I'm a big fan of cichlids but I kind of want something a little "different" and red tails fit the bill.

I dont know the exact dimensions of the tank (Havent bough it yet) but I do know it holds 100 gallons.

:nilly: Might aswell just put a Jag and some other cichlids in there.

If I had the money and space (Always the issue as it seems ) I'd have about 4-5 Red Tails, nice big silver aro, and a motoro or two. :headbang2:

Not normally a fan of P's but they are interesting. What about a nice big Black Rhom? Maybe a Ternetzi(probably spelt that wrong)

Since it's not big enough for a redtail, and I optimally want to house the fish for life(I just think it would be too hard to put all that work into growing out a monster and having to let it go, like raising a child, LOL!) any other suggestions that would qualify as "toothy" oddballs.

Single speciman is something I want to avoid, but I dont mind it.
Paired with this thread I'm lurking the forums and looking at fish I like.

redtails are said to get about 18 inches. they grow rely slow though (same w atf's). a 100 would last a long time. sorry they dont have much of a personality though. maybe try a cuda.....

I've had FW Cuda before. Way too skiddish for me.

I'll have to keep looking around and try and figure out what Im gonna do.

my redtail has loads of personality.
chases other fish around and when im near the tank he'll look up waiting for a feeder.
a 100g is gonna last you a LONG time.
ive had mine for about 3 mths and hes grown like an inch.they get to 18 inches.
about the same growth as a atf.
which will get to about 2 feet.
it should work if you plan to get a bigger tank.
you could also try cudas.

My Tat is boring! No personality. When I get close to the tank, he swims to the other side like an abused child:irked:
