Where Snakedheads come from
Hey guys, i have a question. I was at lfs earlier and surprisingly they had something unique, red tailed catfish about 2in in length. My hand is really itching to get it but i had to pass to do some research. Currently i have 3 pacus, 2 of them about 4in and one about 6in. Will the pacus attack the 2in catfish? The catfish costs more than all three Pacus combined so i wouldnt wanna take a chance. Any advice would be apreciated. Thanks! :)

they might.... have a hiding place for your RTC....they like to hide when they are younger anyway... he wont stay that size for long....he will be bigger that the pacus in a couple of weeks/months...hope you have a big tank they grow pretty massive you wouldnt believe their growth rate....

Yeah, once the catfish get bigger, pacues will more than likely leave it alone. I got 27" pacu in my tank with 20" Tiger Shovelnose catfish and they both do fine.

Hmmm, my tank is bare at the moment because previously i couldnt keep any deco or wood because of the Pacus. Whenever i turn on the light or slam the door, they go crazy and everything in the tank is all over. Thanks for the advice.

I guess, i have to keep the RTC separate till he's as big as the pacus.

How big is your tank? RTC's and pacus both need ATLEAST a 600 gallon tank to be good for about 5-6 years.

In 1-2 months time they will bet 10" so they will already almost grow out of that 300l you want. I suggest getting a 1000l growout if you really want to be responsible.

As an owner of three Pacu and one RTC in their "juvenile" stages, (RTC is about two feet and Pacus are from 14 to 22 inches), my opinion is that these two species coexist very well. If you train the Pacus to eat from the top of the water, and the RTC to either eat from your hand or pellets that sink, you can avoid a lot of competition at feeding time. Keep in mind that the Pacus are going to eat whatever goes in the tank, even if it sinks to the bottom, so hand-feeding your RTC is really the best way to make sure he gets enough food and the Pacus don't explode. I keep my guys in 1,000 gallons. IMO, this is the smallest size appropriate for these monster fish as adults. Also, I'm going to suggest that, rather than buying tank after tank to grow them out, just go ahead and build the final product. Chances are, nothing you purchase in the process of grow out tanks is going to be useable on this final product, and we all know you can't get your money back out of used products. This large volume, along with the opaque sides which will likely accompany it (unless you're doing a 1,000 gallon aquarium... in which case, can I have too? LOL) will solve your Pacus' skittish problems. Mine hardly ever "freak out" in the manner that I've seen Pacus exhibit while in an aquarium.

1,000 Liters is about 250 gallons... not large enough to house these guys for more than six to eight months, I think.
