They can be kept singly, but they do better in 2 or more. You're looking at around 10 inches in captivity, but it depends on the species. Falcatus are the biggest I think, and the most common. POtentially up to a foot in a big tank.
They can absolutely be kept with tankmates, they are not aggressive at all. But you can't keep with bully fish like cichlids, they are are not fighters, only pure predators. They don't fight back if bullied/attacked. Good tankmates are bichirs and catfish and peaceful midwater swimmers.
You need a decent size tank, even though they are not huge fish.
I had a pair of acestrorhynchus altus, between 5 and 7 inches - I kept them in a 12 inch wide tank, an 18 inch wide tank and a 24 inch wide tank. They were only at their best in the 2' wide. Very uncomfortable and nervous in the 12 inch wide tank.
