Hey guys, i just got a freeeeee red tailed catfish from my LFS with the new tank im buying, and was wondering what he eats, how big he gets, and how much hes worth...? :headbang2

O.k. I'll answer in order
just about anything...
HUGE...
not really all that much, but I guess it depends on your location....

Seriously though, you can feed them any type of pellets, RAW seafood from the grocery store(I recommend freezing first if you by it fresh to kill any potential bacteria), nightcrawlers, OCCASIONAL LEAN red meat and chicken, some fruits (such as mellons and berries) and some veggies.
They get HUGE, small ones can grow 3"-3.5" a month!! They can and will quickly reach 3 feet in the proper environs. Be prepared for a monster VERY quickly! Ideally you should have a pond (preferable indoors in the cooler states) 10' x 5' x 4' minimum for A adult. Otherwise, a large aquarium, 180 gallons or bigger would be O.K. for a couple of years.

hope that new tank is huge they can get like 4-5 feet long.

Free rtc? What size was it? Probably one someone brought in and the store couldn't get rid of it. Love them, but it's hard to shuffle them through all the tanks they will need as they grow into adults. Once an adult they will need a huge tank. if the dimensions are right 500-1000 gals would do better than most.

What is it with all the freebies I've seen online ... I can't get ANYTHING for free from my LFS :(

Good Grab, if you can't house it though ... find it a good home... like send it to me... 1 is never enough LOL ;)

lol, I can't even find catfish at my lfs. They all have to be special ordered unless its an irridescent shark, black finned shark, or pictus.

I snatch them up when I can find them!

what size tank did you buy??
