Now I have had a 500gal pond for several years now. My Koi and turtles have made it through winters fine. I was debating dropping my red-tailed catfish in the pond. He is roughly a foot long. I understand he needs around 85 deg water which is not a problem during summer months. I have been exploring solar/ glass/ heating elements to keep the water warm over the winters, all to no avail. Has any one ever tried this before or wasted cause???

if you cant keep the ponds temperiture above 75 degrees at all times then you might as well put the RTC down now.

idk maybe u could have a deicer in the summer and winter lulz were u live OH SWEET JERSEY i was thinkin about doin dat but idk

Unless you cant provide temps of at least 75F year round, forget it.

agreed, i have 3500 gal pond and with 3 300 watt heaters and 1 500 watt deicer, and our winters usually are not to bad however today it is in the 30's my water temp is 58 degrees, good luck on the solar i tried a solar cover a few years back and nearly killed my koi, the gases from the bacteria could not escape made a very poisonous condition.

Why don't you use the heating system out of a hot tub? No problem keeping the water temps up.

wait, aren't turtles illegal in nj?
