hey, Im thinking about starting a school of these guys. I know they can be difficult, anyone have any info on price, and availability? If they are really impossible to find (or crazy expensive), what's a better alternative payara? the ideal situation is a school of about 5 of these guys, maybe two severums and a tig. is this even possible? thanks

tats r deff ur best bet. they can be housed w lots of diff fish, but remember they grow slower than most other fish

as for price, usually around 60 bucks around here....

deff get them ID'ed b4 u buy, unless u know how to id them...

thanks alot! I actually prefer slow growing fish lol, I enjoy having them longer :) tats are the red tailed ones?

Tats are your best bet for a shoal. I was up to 3 and then i lost 2 in a week long power outage a month ago. My goal is 6 and I think it will work well. As for the tank mates. I have never kept a sev or a tig. But i see alot of thread abouts tig's eating other fish. So if it grows faster than a TAT that might end up bad. The ideal mates for TAT's IMO are other characins that are big enough not to get eaten and aren't big enought to eat thet tat's. A TAT will not usually pay any attention to a fish that is atleast half there size. Mine were all between 6-8'' and there mates were 4 hujeta characins about 4-8'' long. It worked out well. ----------------------i have been on the hunt for them for 2-3 years now and i have bought every one I have seen locally. i have paid between 30 and 40 bucks for them.

cool thank you so much for all the info! Tigs do eat other fish but im gonna try to buy them all around the same size.

the best payara to own if youre keeping several IMO.
do well with other fish, hardier than scombs, and look GREAT in a school.
i think these guys are seasonal.
a school of 6 is also my goal....
but they grow a wee bit too slow.
