Good day everyone-

Just have a couple questions. First off, how do I determine if my red-tailed shark is male or female?? I have searched many resources trying to find the answer but I never find any helpful info.

Also, I have recently moved him (or her?) to their own 10 gallon tank for now. He was pestering his 30 gal tankmates so I moved him out. He seems lonely in the 10 gal though..? Is this a possibility? I want to buy a couple bala sharks for friends to him, & move all to a 55 gal tank. Do you think he is ok by himself or should I buy more?

any info is greatly appreciated:) I have just started this hobby last October & I have become addicted to learning as much as I can.

Thanks all!

You posted the question in the SW section you would get a better response in one of the FW setups. But to answer your question I think the redtail are pretty aggressive towards each other so getting another is out of the question. Also bala sharks get 12"+ way to big for 55g.

they are cyprinids and are closer related to barbs and carp...

i THINK the females have a rounder belly and the males have a flatter one... but IDK for sure...

Sorry if I posted in wrong place, I just joined & am trying to figure this out:) haha! Thanks for the answers though. I am still wondering what would be a good friend for him? any thoughts?

ps. what is the FW setup section?

i have 2 red tails and they play with each other. either that or fight with each other but they always chase each other around. the bala sharks i have hang with each other
