hii i have a red tail catfish of 3"
does it bottom food such as tetra bits sinking

Based on my experience, initially catfish will eat from the bottom. Then gradually you can teach the fish to eat directly from your hand, you need to do this slowly and gain it trust. It will grow up very fast until a stage where it will slow down. It will eat all your other fish irrelevant if it is a cheap or very expensive fish. Its head is very hard, kind like a shell. Once it starts to grow big, skip day between feeding. Once bigger, I think 1 time a week is OK. Dont get worry if the fish dont start to eat. Probably they spit out whatever they have eaten before and it has contaminate the water. Throw it out and do your water replacement... change the feeding routine and before you know it you have a very big happy "red" tail catfish (not a dull color). They are nice fish... a nocturnal fish, very active at night... so feed it during the night. Force it to eat vegetable by mixing it with your meat. Before you know it... without the meat... they'll eat the vegetables...!!!

you'll want to feed something more substantial than tetra bits though

i want to know that do they eat it or not

essentially, they'll eat anything that can fit in their mouths whether it's good for them or not.
Tank mates = food
Tank heaters and suction clips = food
Wrong sized rocks = food
Hikari do a good range of sinking catfish food, also foods like bloodworm, shrimp, silversides, etc will go down well.

Good luck with your monster, big catfish are great when they react to your voice and eat from your hand.

Feed earthworms, small pieces of fish filet, shrimp, Hikari Sinking Carnivore (you may have to cut this in half), bloodworms, etc. Yeah, he will eat that, but these are the foods that I had success with when my RTC was just a tiny guy. Also, be sure to move him out of tanks with other fish that even remotely look like he can eat them way before he gets to a size where it's a risk. There are too many stories of RTCs eating Aros almost the same size as them.

Disclaimer: This fish will grow to at least four feet and require a minimum of 1,000 gallons to survive. This will happen quickly. Typically, growth to two feet takes place in the first year.

I feed mine bloodworms right now. I swear he's grown at least an inch since I got him a little over a week ago.

they'll eat it, but you'll have to eventually need to feed something a little bit more substantial, like some of the foods mentioned by others in this thread
